DNA projects
From ISOGG Wiki
A DNA project collects and collates DNA test results in order to make comparisons with other project members. The results are usually displayed on a dedicated DNA project website, either hosted on the website of the testing company or on a private website. DNA projects are run by volunteer project administrators, sometimes in conjunction with one or more co-administrators, and receive no financial remuneration from the testing companies. The following are the main types of DNA project:
Geographical DNA projects
- Y-DNA geographical projects collect Y chromosome DNA (Y-DNA) results
- mtDNA geographical projects collect mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) results
- Dual geographical projects collect both Y-DNA and mtDNA results
- mtDNA lineage projects collect mtDNA results from men and women who are descended in the matrilineal (all-female) line from a specific female ancestor
- Family Finder projects collect autosomal Family Finder DNA results for a specific region or country
Haplogroup projects
Surname projects
Surname projects have varying remits. Some projects, such as those run by members of the Guild of One-Name Studies will look at a surname on a global basis. Other surname projects, especially those for high-frequency surnames, are restricted to specific countries or regions.
