How to join an FTDNA project

From ISOGG Wiki

Great article but I believe you've left out an important first step. This is copied from the Products page of FTDNA site:

"Products & Pricing

Before You Order

Before placing an order through this page, search for a Surname Project for your last name, which may entitle you to a reduced price when you order a test kit as a member of the Surname Project. Search by entering your surname in the Surname Search box on the right."

When trying to encourage someone to order a test, I point them to a login window which allows them to order their kit as a member of a Project and before they have a kit #. The price break is worth it. Also I notice now that the only way one can order a 12 or 25 marker test is through a Project. If ordered from their Home Page, the minimum is a 37 marker test.

Here is the login window for the Jackson Project. See No. 2 on this widow: http://www.familytreedna.com/group-join-request.aspx?group=Jackson . I assume the Project name in the URL could be changed to get to any 'ordering through a Project' window. --Janiejac 05:12, 18 July 2010 (UTC)

I've amended the intro slightly. The page was primarily intended for people who want to join haplogroup projects and people who have tested with the Genographic Project or one of the FTDNA affiliates. They often seem to have problems working out how to join projects, especially when they aren't yet in a project and don't have a project admin to help them. As Tom has suggested below we probably need a few other pages. I was thinking of doing one on "How to transfer your Genographic results to the FTDNA database". Would have to separate "How to Join" pages?

This "How to Join" is for current FTDNA project members. There might be a need for additional pages.

  • How to join a FTDNA project (never tested)
  • How to join a FTDNA project (already FTDNA tested)
  • How to join a FTDNA project (National Geographic Genographic Project tested)(NGGP)

Depending on the project:

  • How to join a FTDNA project (tested other company)

Of course the last one would depend on whether the project's administrator maintains a separate website and can add the person to the DNA matrix or requires them to take a FTDNA test.

Disambiguation page would be needed: "How to join a DNA project"
