Dr. James M. Owston is professional educator whose interests run the gamut from history and genealogy to music. He is a graduate of Marshall University (EdD, EdS, & MA), West Virginia University (MA), Southern New Hampshire University (Grad Cert.), Kentucky Christian University (BTh & AB), and Mountain State University (BS & BS). He has been researching his family since the beginning of 1978 and has been pursuing genetic genealogy activities since 2008.

Owston is one of several researchers of the Owston and Ouston surnames and has registered the the names with Guild for One-Name Studies. He can trace his direct patrilineal lineage to Peter Owston who died in 1568.

Owston is a member of ISOGG, the Guild of One-Name Studies, the Sons of the American Revolution, the Sons of the Union Veterans of the Civil War, and Mensa.

His haplogroups are I-A10921 (Y-DNA) and H23 (mtDNA).
