Oxford Ancestors haplogroup nicknames
From ISOGG Wiki
The idea of using nicknames for haplogroups was introduced by Professor Bryan Sykes in his book The Seven Daughters of Eve (Bantam Press, London, 2001). In the book he assigned names to the seven major mitochondrial DNA haplogroups or "clans". The system was subsequently expanded to embrace further mtDNA clades, and a separate system of names for the Y-DNA haplogroups. The Y-DNA and mtDNA haplogroup clan names are used in the reports provided by Sykes's company Oxford Ancestors.
mtDNA haplogroup nicknames
Sykes identified a total of 36 mtDNA clan names for the worldwide clan mothers or haplogroups. Seven of these clan mothers were confined to Europe and were known as the Seven Daughters of Eve. The original seven daughters are as follows:
- Helena: corresponds to Haplogroup H
- Jasmine: corresponds to Haplogroup J
- Katrine: corresponds to Haplogroup K
- Tara: corresponds to Haplogroup T
- Ursula: corresponds to Haplogroup U5
- Velda: corresponds to Haplogroup V
- Xenia: corresponds to Haplogroup X
Since then the mtDNA tree has undergone many revisions but Oxford Ancestors have not introduced any new clan names. Some genetic genealogists have introduced nicknames for new haplogroups or for those which were overlooked by Sykes. The following is a list of the major mtDNA haplogroups and their nicknames or clan names where available.
